My work combines figures and patterns to express feelings we can all have in common including vulnerability, doubt, and hope. I comb through images from various print media, the television, and personal photos in search of a moment, an interaction, or an emotion that resonates with me. The focal point of the work is the posture and facial expression of the subject. I then use patterning to create a mental landscape in which to situate the figure. Color and intricate line work help interpret the subject's thoughts and/or feelings, as well as convey the work's overall mood.

I work in oils, on canvases varying in size up to about 60 inches, and in ink and gouache on paper, the drawings ranging from 1 inch to 25 inches. My process employs layers, each new layer working off marks from the one underneath. The bottom layers focus on color, pattern, and space while the later layers integrate the figure(s), creating an increasingly complex and expressive picture.
